This course examines the world of work through a sociological lens. It explores the ways that managers and the state have aimed to organize work, how workers have responded individually and collectively to working conditions, how work structures shape inequalities, and ideas and practices to balance family, work, and leisure. Topics include culture as a set of historically grounded values and beliefs; culture's role in both expressing and subverting ideals; the frequent gap between ideals and reality. Prerequisite: 100-level Sociology course.
