An examination of transformations in the Jewish family and attitudes toward sexuality in Judaism, from antiquity to the present. Topics include love, sexuality, and desire in the Bible and Talmud; marriage and divorce through the ages; position and treatment of children; sexuality and spirituality in the Kabbalah; sexual stereotypes in American Jeish culture and Israeli society. Interdisciplinary readings draw on biblical and rabbinic literature, comparative Christian and Islamic sources, historical and scientific research on family and sexuality, and contemporary fiction.

Instruction of Hebrew through the use of: clips from Israeli feature films and from other video sources (TV programs, documentaries, etc.); radio broadcasts, popular songs and other audio recordings; newspaper items; and multimedia computer programs. Most materials will be web-based, some on CD's/DVD's. When available, the resources used will include interactive assignments.

Continuation of HEBREW 110. Further preparation for basic proficiency in all four basic language skills, with emphasis on speaking. Language lab. Prerequisite: HEBREW 110.

The cycling and distribution of "life elements" (C, O, N, S, P) and compounds in modern and ancient marine and terrestrial settings. Emphasis on the transfer of compounds from the biota to their surroundings. Topics include: anthropogenic influence on biogeochemical cycles, imporance of microbes in geochemistry, utility of bio-markers in reconstructing paleoecosy-stems and paleoenvironments. Prerequisite: one year of college chemistry, or Geo-Sci 415 or consent or instructor. Organic Chemistry highly recommended.

Geology of solar system. Emphasis on the solid bodies, age, sequence of events, composition, surficial and internal geologic processes. Geologic mapping of selected portions of Moon, Venus, and Mars using recent imagery from the space program. Consent of instructor required.

Theoretical and practical application of x-ray fluorescence analysis in determining major and trace element abundances in geological materials. Prerequisite: Analytical Geochemistry.

An increasing body of observations gives a collective picture of a warming world and other changes in the climate system. In this course we will examine past, current, and future climate change and explore causes, impacts, and possible mitigation strategies.

This course addresses the challenges faced by 21st century cities as the world?s population becomes increasingly urbanized. These challenges are grouped in five themes: water, land, air, built environment and community. The course takes an integrative, geographical, case-study based approach in its exploration of the linkages between these issues and the physical, social, cultural, economic and political aspects of today?s rapidly changing cities.
