This course examines the world of work through a sociological lens. It explores the ways that managers and the state have aimed to organize work, how workers have responded individually and collectively to working conditions, how work structures shape inequalities, and ideas and practices to balance family, work, and leisure. This class will use sociological concepts to explore the diverse cultures, societies and politics of the Latin American and Caribbean region. Themes covered will include: colonialism and neocolonialism; class and inequality; race, ethnicity and identity; gender and sexuality; religion, social control and change; art, music and dance; revolutions and social movements; globalization and migrations.

Interpretations of social life developed by symbolic interactionists. Topics include the interactionist approach to language, the self, deviance, social relationships, social structure and collective behavior. (Gen.Ed. SB)
