S-Broadcast News Reporting

The course will look at the business of television writing and reporting. The class will be composed of lectures, discussions and readings. Students will be required to join UVC 19, the campus television station. There is small fee for training. Students will produce stories for broadcast on the station, which will mean a time commitment outside of class. Students will be working on a deadline to produce these stories. Students also make a field trip to abc40 to see an actual news broadcast.

Internship

Journalism 394I is a three-credit practicum experience that includes intensive reporting, writing, workplace collaboration and reflection on ethics, the role of public writing and the liberal arts education in the real-world experiences of the journalist. In addition to the traditional internship experience at a qualified employer, students will participate in a blog published on the Journalism Program website in which they will reflect on their liberal arts education and its relevance in their journalistic activities on the internship.

S-Travel Writing & Photojrnlsm

This course requires a group trip to Sicily during spring break in March. Students will learn about travel writing and cultural reporting. Photography will be taught by an experienced photographer, including digital photography using Photoshop. A photo essay and a travel article are required along with several readings. Students are required to eat weird food with a smile. Sign-up in fall semester is required.

Media Criticism

American journalism is going through what might be the greatest upheaval in its history. This course examines the causes of this upheaval -- technological, economic, cultural, ideological -- and their current and prospective impact. It also looks at some efforts to set standards for the performance of journalists.

Images in Sports

This course will examine the role of the sports photographer and how it has evolved over the decades. There will be special emphasis on various sports and methods of photographing them. Students will shoot, edit and transmit photos from a wide variety of local events to gain real-world skills in covering games and meeting tight deadlines.

Intro to Digital Photojrnalism

This is an introductory level course for students who wish to acquire a working knowledge of the field of photojournalism and the various tools used in modern image processing for both print and online media. Covered topics will include basic camera and lens techniques, exposure issues, composition and depth of field, digital image processing with Photoshop, news, feature, and sports photography, ethics, and credibility in the age of the digital image. Students are encouraged to own or have access to a digital SLR camera with manual functions for this class.

GoingGlobal:Chngs/IntlJournlsm

The idea of a "Third World," a world in which at least 70% of the people of the world now live, was conceived in the West and remains largely a Western concept. The unity and most of the qualities assigned to the Third World have also been largely Western. In this course we will examine the ways in which the Third World is represented by Western media. And using an anthropological and political economy approach we will deconstruct the propaganda used to continue the imbalance in the flow of information between the West and the Third World.

Intro to Multimedia Reporting

Students build on the skills learned in Journalism 300, while gaining the technical skills to tell stories in online platforms, using digital images and audio podcasts. Students learn how to find and work with online sources, and produce online news packages in areas like the environment, the economy, education and other topics.
