Survey of social, political and cultural change in the Middle East from the rise of the Ottoman Empire around 1300 to the present. Topics include the impact on the Middle East of the shift in world trade from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic; social, political, and cultural change; Ottoman and European relations; imperialism and revolution; World War I and the peace settlement; state formation; and the rise of nationalism and religious fundamentalism. Latin America: National Period

Lecture and discussion course examining the creation of modern Latin America, concentrating on the struggles over land and labor, the creation of nation-states, and the conflicts within those states over issues of citizenship and social justice. The course also addresses the contentious role the United States has played in the region. (Gen.Ed. HS, G)

West Thot Since 1600

Major historical developments from the beginning of secular state systems in the 17th century, with emphasis on Europe. Topics include the Scientific Revolution, Enlightenment, nationalism, socialism, diplomacy and war. Coverage extends to the declining role of Europe in world affairs since World War II. (Gen.Ed. HS)
