Males and females differ in many ways as regards infectious diseases such as in their exposure to infectious agents, access to and use of treatment, incidence, and outcome. Differences are due to both biological differences between males and females, as well as societal differences associated with gender that are not generally recognized. This seminar will examine differences between males and females for a variety of infectious diseases.

An introduction to data management for research projects in the biomedical sciences using microcomputers. Topics include design of data collection forms, data entry, computer managed documentation and statistical computing using SAS.

Env. & Occupational Toxicology

The toxicological activity of toxic substances found in the general environment and in industrial settings. Topics include biochemical mechanisms for absorption, excretion, tissue distribution, metabolic transformations, and conjugations; comparative metabolism of animal species; special applications to the toxicology of heavy metals, pesticides, and other industrial chemicals.

Epidemlgcl Invstgtn

Provides students with the necessary analytic techniques, technical resources, and writing expertise to design and write their own thesis proposal and final thesis manuscript in the field of epidemiology. Also applies to students preparing to publish in journals and write grant proposals. Based on structure of a research proposal, beginning with sessions on conducting a literature review, progressing through methods and results, to the discussion. Students prepare a written proposal and a class presentation, and critique another student's presentation. Prerequisite: BIOST&EP 630.
