Designed as part of the living-learning community in Thatcher Language House. Improves knowledge of the Japanese language with emphasis on oral skills. Builds vocabulary, develops ability to understand and communicate more freely in the language by focusing on social and cultural issues.

Examination of various Japanese performance aspects: literary texts on stage, architecture of traditional and modern theaters, gendered acting, social backgrounds of actors and audiences, music and dance. We'll read plays, a history of Japanese theater, and an anthropological study of gendered acting. We'll see films based on plays, and educational videos. Field trips to Japanese performing arts on stage. (Gen.Ed. AT, G)

This course examines the history of Japanese religions, including Shintoism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, and various new religions through themes such as art, ritual, gender, charisma, and sacred space.
