The course format includes small group conversation sessions and individual tutorials. Students studying Urdu develop speaking, listening, reading, writing, and cultural etiquette skills needed for study abroad in Pakistan or India and engagement with Urdu-speaking communities, and to support course work in South Asian Studies and other academic, vocational, and personal goals.

Students studying Swahili develop speaking, listening, reading, writing, and cultural etiquette skills needed for study abroad in East Africa (especially Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda) and engagement with Swahili-speaking communities, and to support course work in African Studies and other academic, vocational, and personal goals.

The course format includes intensive independent study and an evaluation by an outside evaluator, as well as collaborative contribution of course readings and discussion questions. Students studying Norwegian develop speaking and listening skills needed for study abroad in Norway and engagement with Norwegian-speaking communities, and to support course work in Scandinavian and European Studies and other academic, vocational, and personal goals.
