Visual Communication

The course will cover principles of graphic design, visualizing information, information graphics, and portfolio design. Course lectures will be complemented by digital skills workshops where students will become familiar with graphic design software (Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign). Through weekly exercises, students will build the skills necessary to complete a portfolio of creative work, or a visual book or project showcasing a body of research. For students interested in visual communication, data visualization, graphic design and portfolio design.

Africa in the News

Most people learn about Africa through the news. Yet media coverage of Africa often reads like a series of unmitigated disasters?stories of violence, poverty, and corruption. While these are real phenomena, they can only be understood through engagement with longer histories of capitalism, colonialism, and enslavement in Africa. This course will provide some of the historical context necessary to understand and interpret politics and society in contemporary Africa. Each unit will introduce a theme in contemporary African affairs and historicize it.

Genomes & Genetic Analysis Lab

A laboratory designed to give students an introduction to genomics and the molecular biology of genetics. Students gain experience with a variety of classical and modern techniques used in human genetic analysis and several experiments using students' DNA are performed throughout the semester. Laboratory and computer-based projects include PCR, restriction analysis and DNA sequencing as well as contemporary bioinformatics and genome database analyses. Corequisite: BIO 230. Enrollment limited to 16.

Thry & Rsrch: Sport Org Behav

The module will examine the study of organizational behavior within the context of the sport industry. The module will provide coverage of key organizational behavior topics and accompanying theories, as well as an examination of how these topics/theories are being studied in the sport management literature.

Ecotoxicology & Public Health

This course will provide a broad perspective of environmental contaminants, how they impact wildlife, and what lessons can be learned and applied to protect human health. Students will gain knowledge of basic principles of ecotoxicology and an understanding of critical case studies that have informed policies and practice in public health.
