This course explores the causes and consequences of what was arguably the most horrific event in all of history. Topics include both the long-term origins of the Holocaust in European racism and anti-Semitism and the more immediate origins in the dynamics of the Nazi state and the war against the Soviet Union.

College Writing

ENGLWRIT 112 (College Writing) is a first-year college-level writing course designed to help students expand their ability to write essays for academic, civic, and personal purposes and to develop their rhetorical awareness to write effectively in new social contexts. Based on the assumption that writing is a social activity, this course requires active engagement in the writing process, including pre-writing, peer review, revision, and editing. Students write five essays. This is the only course at UMass Amherst which satisfies the General Education College Writing (CW) requirement.

Intro to Multicultural Educ

Introduction to the sociohistorical, philosophical, and pedagogical foundations of cultural pluralism and multicultural education. Topics include experiences of racial minorities, white ethnic groups and women; intergroup relations in American society, sociocultural influences and biases in schools; and philosophies of cultural pluralism.

Quantum Communication

This course will provide an introduction to fundamental principles underlying quantum communication, including quantum repeaters, entanglement, and other tools needed for the implementation of distributed quantum protocols. Topics include: basics of quantum computation and information; modeling and coping with noise in quantum systems; entanglement generation schemes; quantum Internet and its applications. Meets with and is identical to 590QC, with the exception that students will carry out a research project involving a simulation of a quantum network.

Reverse Engin & Exploit Dev

Software is everywhere and many developers aren't aware of how to properly write secure code. We will cover practical skills in reverse engineering and binary exploitation and delve into the techniques used by adversaries for some of the largest security incidents of the century. With a strong understanding of attack patterns, students will be able to implement more secure coding practices into their own code and defend against these attacks.

Ideas that have changed you, the student, and your relationship to history. 4. Ideas that have changed your personal history.Satisfies the Integrative Experience requirement for BA-Hist majors. (No credit after History 391G).
