Intro/Graphic Novel

This course is an introduction to the graphic novel, including consideration of the history, narrative structure, aesthetics, and genres of the graphic novel. From the awarding of a Pulitzer Prize to Art Spiegelman?s Maus in 1985 to today, graphic novels have grown in literary and academic recognition, been embraced by major publishers in the United States and around the world, and attracted artists and writers of the highest caliber to this field.

Nobel Prize Fictions

Nobel Prize Fictions is designed to familiarize students with contemporary literature within the framework of a prestigious literary award. The course will focus on the recipients of the prize in this millennium and will address questions of current social, political, cultural, relevance in relation to literature. Each week will be dedicated to the study of one Nobel laureate and the theme will be set by the Swedish Academy?s statement for the recipient of the award.

Brave New World

This course explores a selection of works of dystopian and utopian fiction and may include examples from film, television, and other media, in addition to literature. An important part of this exploration will be to consider the relationship between this imaginative fiction and the real world conditions which may have prompted it. We will also discuss what these texts have to offer us as warnings for our own society or ideas for a better future.

This introductory course examines the far-reaching significance of translation and uses insights and practices from the field of literary translation to help students improve their communication skills. Translation is not just a straightforward matter of exchanging words in one language for words in another. It involves cultural, social, aesthetic, political, economic, and ethical considerations.
