This course will apply a bio-cultural evolutionary perspective to understand the human capacity for belief in the supernatural. We will begin with a broad survey of the anthropology of religion, then look in depth at the evolutionary origins of religious thought. We will examine the evolution of religion from the perspective of cultural anthropology, primatology, archaeology, evolutionary biology, and neurology. We will also examine religion and spirituality in relation to physical and mental health. Satisfies the Integrative Experience requirement for ANTHRO majors.
