This course is designed for Legal Studies majors in the Commonwealth Honors College to explore together in a community of peers the joys and challenges of undertaking original research. We will study key steps in the research process, common challenges that can arise, and strategies for preventing and overcoming them. Students will be exposed to various research methods, identify their skills and strengths useful for researching, examine honors theses, and learn from faculty, alums, and students who have successfully undertaken original research.

Topics include: biophysical signals, frequency content, Fourier series, Fourier analysis, principles of data collection, data smoothing, electromyography, amplifier response characteristics, software data manipulation. Topics in Advanced Swahili I focuses on developing advanced reading and speaking skills, expanding vocabulary, and improving the ability to describe/narrate in detail and support opinions. Topics are chosen in consultation with the program director. Students studying Swahili develop speaking, listening, reading, writing, and cultural etiquette skills needed for study abroad in East Africa (especially Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda) and to support course work in African studies.

In this interdisciplinary laboratory course, we will explore the topic of imaging biological material, beginning with optics and basic microscopy. Students will perform hands-on exercises in the use of the light microscope, digital cameras, and image processing and quantification. Common pitfalls in imaging biological samples will be covered. Students will perform experiments to test and quantify various aspects of cell migration, cell cycle regulation, mitosis and endocytosis.
