FYS- The Human Species

This course will provide first year students with an introduction to UMass and campus resources while also learning about the four fields of anthropology: cultural anthropology, archaeology, biological anthropology, and linguistic anthropology. Specifically, we will focus on biological anthropology through hands-on activities using specimens and discussing the scientific method. Get ready to learn more about yourself and the Human Species!

S-Sound Design Studio

This course provides advanced application of the art and craft of sound design. The tools and processes essential to conceptualizing and implementing aural content and technical delivery of a sound design will be utilized in the department?s main-stage productions, supplemented by class projects.

Power is a central feature of political life and one of the key concepts of political science. This course will examine the main approaches and controversies in the study of power. We will investigate how these approaches help us to better understand how power operates in the real world by engaging with various case studies, including: how power works in prisons, schools, at home, in local and global politics, in an Appalachian mining town, a small village in Malaysia, and in countless ways in every day life. FYS- RAP First Year Seminar

First Year Seminars that are part of the Residential Academic Program (RAP), are seminars where students will explore the subject of the associated RAP. Students participate in small group projects and class discussions. Provides a supportive environment for personal reflection and critical thinking on the topics germane to the course content. Students will identify ways to incorporate personal interests with academic interests.

Adv Construction Tech Trends

This course introduces students to material testing and technological environments in which the construction industry operates today. The program is designed for students with a passion for technologies such as cloud data, drones, photogrammetry, additive manufacturing, AI, Robotics, VR, and AR in the Built Environment and a passion to influence the design and engineering of the built environment through material testing such as nondestructive testing and evaluation, chemical testing, thermal analysis, and code compliance testing.
