Molecular Genetics w/Lab

(Offered as BIOL 371 and BCBP 371) A study of the molecular mechanisms underlying the transmission and expression of genes. DNA replication and recombination, RNA synthesis and processing, and protein synthesis and modification will be examined. Both prokaryotic and eukaryotic systems will be analyzed, with an emphasis upon the regulation of gene expression. Application of modern molecular methods to biomedical and agricultural problems will also be considered. The laboratory component will focus upon recombinant DNA methodology.

Urban Greening Theory&Practice

Since the rise of urban civilization, vegetated public space has been a strategy to enhance the experience of living in cities. The purpose of this course is to explore the theoretical and practical expressions of this urban greening aspiration, defined here as the introduction or conservation of outdoor flora in cities. Toward this goal, the course is organized in two parts: First, we will analyze the various discourses that have, and are currently, animating urban greening practice. Second, we will explore how urban greening is expressing itself in cities around the world today.

Plant Propagation

With lab. The basic principles and techniques for propagating plants by both sexual and asexual means, including seeds, cuttings, bulbs, and tissue culture. The hormonal and physiological factors affecting rooting, seed dormancy, grafting, budding, and layering. Prerequisite: BIOLOGY 103 or equivalent.

S-InterpAnalysis/ConsumptnMkt

This seminar introduces and trains students in the process of analyzing unstructured qualitative data using interpretive methods. It covers the philosophy, theory, and methodology of interpretive analysis used in marketing and other social science disciplines, including coding, cases, themes, and theory development. The seminar provides analytical tools for qualitative researchers and others to strengthen the conceptual and practical contributions of their work.

S-Cultural Psych & Soc Issues

The objective of this course is to examine the role culture plays in influencing human thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, with a particular focus on its implications for social issues. This course includes readings on the reasons behind diverse thought patterns and behaviors across different global communities, highlighting the cultural nature of Homo sapiens.
