This course fulfills the Junior Year Writing requirement on a variety of topics.

This course explores Jewish life in Eastern Europe from the perspective of cultural studies. Particular emphasis is on origins of Soviet-Jewish culture, ethnicity, and identity, interaction with the surrounding society, immigration, Jews under communism, Holocaust, and transformation of Russian Jewish life in the twentieth century. Readings from various historical and literary sources; excerpts from film and media. (Gen.Ed. HS, DG)

Survey of antisemitism through its various stages of historical development, from ancient times to the present. Primary focus on the intellectual, religious, political, and social roots of Jew-hatred. Special attention to its impact on Jewish life and thought, and to the range of Jewish re-sponses to anti-semitism. Topics include: the Jews in Graeco-Roman society; medieval Christendom and Islam; the emergence of modern political and racial anti-semitism. (Gen.Ed. HS, DG)

This course examines the production, consumption, and meaning of food within the context of Jewish civilization in a global, diachronic framework, beginning in Biblical times and ending with the modern Jewish deli. (Gen. Ed. HS, DG)

What part does humor play in Jewish culture? This course examines Jewish humor in literature, folklore, film, TV, and stand-up comedy. Topics include: the origins of modern Jewish humor, Yiddish satire and comedy, Jewish role in popular culture in the US, Europe, and Israel, and the relationship of Jewish humor to antisemitism.
