Where is Central Asia? How have events and processes in Central Asia impacted us here in the United States? What can we learn about core political science themes ? for example governance and authoritarianism, political violence, identity politics, and economic development ? through an investigation of contemporary Central Asia? The course uses the Central Asian experience to critically interrogate the ways in which broader theories, concepts and approaches in political science resonate in Central Asia.

The media have been known as the "fourth branch" of the American political system, and not without reason. This course examines the changing role of media in American politics. Key issues include how media shapes citizens' thinking about politics, how politicians and citizen activists try to advance their goals through media, and how media outlets themselves shape what is considered news.

Latinos in the United States and the U.S. in Latin America. This course introduces students to the political history, identities, behavior, and activism of Latinx (Latino/a, Hispanic) populations of the United States, placed within the broader context of U.S. engagement with Latin America.
