Although the term 'Renaissance' wasn't invented until centuries later, Florence's fascination with bringing the ancient world back to life ushered in one of the most meaningful intellectual and artistic revolutions of world history. After the Black Death took half of Florence's population and its large banking families had caused and then suffered through ? one of the worst financial disasters in history, Florence was set to spring back to life as well.

Introduction to Italian Lit II

The course will provide an overview of some of the major Italian literary works of the modern times, from the 1600s to contemporary times. It will specifically address the concept of "Modernity" in the literary field in relation with artistic and philosophical movements and with the social and cultural changes leading to the development of Italian contemporary culture. Two formal assignments, midterm, presentations and final paper. Course taught in Italian.

Language Suite Conversation

Thatcher House, by arrangement. First year Programs feature small classes or discussion sections of lecture classes taught in the residence halls. In order to participate, students must register for at least two residentially based courses in each of their first two semesters at the University. Honors Colloquium (ITALIAN HO1) available.

Intensive Intermediate Italian

Reading and discussion, selective grammar review and conversation. Development of reading skills, introduction to modern Italian texts, which will serve as a basis for class discussion and writing assignments. Grammar review and reinforcement will respond to student needs. Selective readings from the works of contemporary Italian authors. Course taught in Italian. Prerequisites: ITAL 120 or 126

The Culture of Italian Comics

Is there an Italian Superman? Do Italians love Mickey Mouse even more than Americans? Are Italians as obsessed with zombies as we are? What are the newest, most interesting Italian graphic novels and what do they tell us about Italian culture, society and history? This course will explore the history of Italian fumetti and graphic novels (in English) beginning with comics journals of the early 1900s and ending with contemporary comic books, strips and graphic novels. Students will learn how to read and interpret the hybrid language of comics, using an appropriate vocabulary for the medium.
