Introduction to the basic methodology and results of modern linguistics. Focus on developing, evaluating, and improving hypotheses concerning the structure of the language user's unconscious linguistic knowledge. Investigation of sentence structure (syntax), sound structure (phonology), word structure (morphology), and meaning (semantics). (Gen.Ed. R2)

ConflictResolution/TrialCourts

The course will focus on civil law and will deal with issues that are unique to each of the respective civil trial courts. Case studies will address the manner in which disputes are resolved by trial or settlement. Some of the issues to be examined are termination of parental rights, sexually dangerous person proceedings and administrative agency appeals. The course will also focus on the equitable jurisdiction of the courts, contract actions and an introduction to real property rights.

Lawyering for a Better World

This course will introduce you (and hopefully get you excited about) the concept of social justice lawyering. We will explore the genres/theoretical frameworks, the legal strategies, the practice models, the motivation to practice this kind of law, and whether the law and lawyers are well suited to create social change.

Anatomy/Criminal Jury Trial

This course will provide basic introduction and exploration of issues involved in a standard criminal jury trial. The course will give students insight and exposure to trial issues including but not limited to jury selection, jury instruction, juror deliberations, jury verdicts and post-verdict sentencing. Students will have opportunities to review current Massachusetts law and standards regarding these issues and participate in class discussions and mock exercises.

Mental Health Advocacy & Law

This course will explore the role of mental healthcare law and procedure in the criminal justice system and will address how mentally ill clients are processed through the criminal justice system. Students will be introduced to the many mental health resources and treatment programs that are currently available to assist individuals. We will also explore contemporary issues in mental health and criminal justice, such as the treatment of mentally ill juveniles and women within the criminal justice system as well as the accessibility of mental healthcare services for at-risk groups.

Law & Pol of Voting Rights/US

"This course traces political and legal struggles over the right to vote and access to electoral power in the United States from the nation?s early history to the present. In this class, you will explore questions such as: What does the U.S. Constitution say about the right to vote? How is the vote protected ? and left unprotected ? by the Constitution and its amendments? What does the Voting Rights Act do? How did it transform the politics of voting in the United States? Why do many people now believe the Voting Rights Act is in trouble? How does the organization of districts ?

Junior/Senior Seminar

In the time that we gather together we will approach ways of making, ways of being, and ways of seeing from a holistic and collaborative perspective. When we are more present with ourselves and others, we can align our interests to relevant systems of production and circulation, including understanding how expressions of power are encoded in every aspect of a project?s lifecycle from sourcing materials to its final departure. You may choose to respond to project prompts in any medium, format or discipline.

Lab Animal Medicine & Mgmt I

This course, and concurrent registration in the associated lab course, ANIMLSCI 455VL, provides basic instruction in laboratory animal anatomy and physiology, restraint and handling, nutrition and management ? with emphasis on the laboratory rat, mouse, hamster, rabbit and gerbil. Lectures include material on principles of disease, research use and therapeutic techniques and well as regulations applicable to research facility operation.
