A complete introduction to computer programming using the Python language. Topics include coverage of all the supported data types and program code structures, functions (up through lambda expressions and recursion), reasoning about and debugging existing code, implementation of custom libraries, selection of data structures, and the fundamentals of object-oriented programming.

This colloquium will complement the material in COMPSCI 589 by covering foundational and recent research papers from the machine learning literature. Students will participate in and lead group discussions of papers, and will also write reading responses.

This colloquium will guide students in an in-depth study of both theoretical and practical cryptographic principles. Topics include zero-knowledge proofs, derivatives of which are now used in anonymous cryptocurrency such as ZCash, secure messaging protocols (e.g. Signal, Whatsapp), and secure multiparty computation. Other topics at student request.

This is an honors colloquium for COMPSCI 311. Students will explore topics from the 311 curriculum in greater detail, focusing on advanced algorithms, real-world application, amortized analysis and space complexity, approximation and randomized algorithms.

This course is structured around six social and professional domains in which interpreting and translation play a significant role (Healthcare, Business, Court/Police, Refugee/Asylum, Human Rights Commissions, and the Military). Students will work on understanding the institutional structures and discursive practices of these particular domains; gain relevant vocabulary; and continue to practice translating, sight translating and interpreting relevant texts.

This course explores the rich world of writing by women in the Middle Ages from the point of view of current theoretical perspectives. Writers include Marie de France, Christine de Pizan, Jah?n-Malek K?tun, Hildegard of Bingen, Margery Kempe, Julian of Norwich, and others. We will discuss themes including love and desire in women?s writing; representations of women in medieval literature and philosophy; gendered representations of sanctity; and critical approaches derived from feminist theory. No prior knowledge of medieval literature is assumed or required.
