Adv Geologic Mapping

Complete series of operations required for publication of a geological map: field location and drawing of contacts, collection and interpretation of field notes, data reduction, drafting, and methods of reproduction. Two afternoons per week in the field. Prerequisites: GEO-SCI 321, 431 or equivalent training.

With lab. Chemical processes affecting the distribution and circulation of chemical compounds in natural waters. Geochemistry of precipitation, rivers, lakes, groundwater, and oceans; applications of thermodynamic equilibria to predicting composition of aqueous systems. Behavior of trace metals and radionuclides in near surface environments. Prerequisite: Chem 111, 112.

FYS-U-Thrive:The Opioid Crisis

This seminar will support your transition to college and introduce you to a topic in public health and health sciences. The first six weeks will provide foundational skills for students to thrive at UMass. The last seven weeks will focus on exploring the topic: The Opioid Crisis. This seminar is designed to give a historical overview of The Opioid Crisis. We will utilize public health and other related academic disciplines to think critically about The Opioid Crisis, and to answer how we got here, where we stand, and where we are headed.

How do we monitor physical activity using sensor-technology? Is the goal of 10,000 steps/day a "myth"? Students will explore associations of physical activity measures such as steps, physical activity intensity with various health outcomes.

The first six weeks will provide foundational skills for students to thrive at UMass. The last seven weeks will focus on exploring the topic: Public Health Culture Wars. Many public health advances were gained through community activism. Together, we will navigate the history of US culture and activism, and their role in public health advances through time.

This seminar will support your transition to college and introduce you to a topic in public health and health sciences. The first six weeks will provide foundational skills for students to thrive at UMass. The last seven weeks will focus on exploring the topic: Marijuana Legalization & Health. The legalization of marijuana is a complex public health topic that includes many potential risks and benefits. We will review the history of marijuana criminalization and the historical precedent for racist drug laws in the US.

The curriculum will assist students with major exploration and declaration, create strategies for academic success, transition to campus life and learn how to effectively navigate and utilize campus resources. To achieve these goals students will engage in reflective self-assessments and connect with faculty, staff and peers to learn more about academic options and opportunities at UMass and skills to develop to be successful at UMass and beyond.
