This course covers the basic principles of pharmacology, including general drug types, dosage forms, drug administration, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics. Drug packaging, labeling, and dispensing are covered, as are record keeping for pharmacologic agents. The legal and ethical factors involved in handling pharmaceuticals are considered. Prescription notation and review of drug calculations are also included.

The nutrition of domesticated animals with emphasis on dietary programs for production and health. Focus on monogastric, ruminant, and cecal digesting species in lecture. Both hand and computer ration balancing techniques used.

This course surveys the common disease conditions of the major body systems in the canine and feline patient. The technician's role in diagnostic procedures, treatments, emergency and critical care, preventative medicine, and client education relative to these disease conditions is emphasized.

Lecture material includes a thorough examination of current techniques in veterinary facility management, technician utilization, client communication, marketing, record keeping, inventory control, and malpractice.

This course consists of rotations in the Community Clinic on the Mount Ida Campus of UMass Amherst. The Community Clinic provides basic veterinary care for economically disadvantaged pet-owners and other under-served populations in Massachusetts. This experiential service-learning course provide students who have completed the pertinent preparatory clinical coursework with practical exam room experience prior to the onset of their senior year internship rotations.
