Game Theory, Honors

Game Theory is the study of strategic interactions, that is, situations in which there is interdependence among the parties to the interaction. Hence, you need to anticipate your opponent's next moves and, accordingly, decide on how to act, while also knowing that s/he is trying to do the same thing. Game Theory is an analytical tool used to explain and predict such interactions, for example between humans, animals, nations, firms, with applications in a wide range of fields such as economics, political science, sociology, business, law, biology, computer science.

S-Cinemas of the Supernatural

Have you ever had, or heard of, an experience that defied rational explanation? Premonitions, apparitions, spirits, divine intervention, reincarnation/mysterious phenomena of all kinds animate films across cinematic traditions around the world. How do we understand the allure of the supernatural, not only in the popular genres of horror, science fiction, and fantasy, but also in "serious" genres such as experimental film, art film, or social realist cinemas? How do different cultural contexts inflect the ways the supernatural signifies in film?

Wood Properties

Wood is an amazing building material: It is beautiful and warm to the touch. It is easy to machine and abundantly available. It is light, yet strong and stiff. And best of all: It comes from a renewable source. To build with wood, however, requires understanding its peculiarities: the variability of its properties, its interaction with water and the possibility of biodeterioration. This course introduces students to the anatomy and properties of wood as applies to construction and architecture. It provides an overview of wood-based products and exposes students to structural systems in wood.

Communicating Sustainability

Effective communication is not always easy or natural, but it can be learned. This course provides a platform to learn and practice principles of professional communication (through presentations, writing, and audio/visual media) in the field of construction and sustainable building. Through various class exercises and assignments, students attain the skills that are required to succinctly get a message across and connect with an audience.

Decommodifying Nature/Reconnec

Extractive colonial and neocolonial capitalism structures and articulates life-giving ecological relations - webs of life - into hierarchies and separations, including commodification of the fundamental biophysical elements of land and water, and separations of people from other species and biophysical systems, the more-than-human. This class explores developments, movements, stories and efforts related to land, water, and the more-than-human, in dialogue with interrelated theoretical/empirical approaches, that aim to find and support life-affirming change.
