Epidemic of Loneliness

Vivek Murthy, the former Surgeon General of the United States, describes loneliness and a major public health problem that has reached epidemic levels worldwide. In this class we will define loneliness and the resulting disconnection and isolation. We will discuss the importance of social connectedness at a community, national, and global level. By exploring issues of identity, race, displacement, and aging, we will gain a deeper understanding of the issues surrounding loneliness. In this course, we will also include strategies for social change to create a more connected world.

In this class, we will explore the relationship between place and health, examine the factors that lead to displacement and the associated health outcomes of forcibly displaced persons. In addition, we will evaluate interventions to improve the health outcomes. Students will critically analyze the social determinants of health in the various contexts and existing policies while developing new intervention and policy proposals to improve health outcomes.

TellingStories/DataStatModelVi

The aim of this course is to provide students with the skills necessary to tell interesting and useful stories in real-world encounters with data. Specifically, they will develop the statistical and programming expertise necessary to analyze datasets with complex relationships between variables. Students will gain hands-on experience summarizing, visualizing, modeling, and analyzing data. Students will learn how to build statistical models that can be used to describe and evaluate multidimensional relationships that exist in the real world.
