In this course, students will explore the in-water research activities that are conducted by a research team to assess the threats that sea turtles are exposed to in the waters off of the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica. Activities will include careful capture and tagging, weighing, taking body measurements, and collecting samples before the turtles are released once again into the ocean. Students will also discuss how mangrove wetlands play an important role in coastal and marine ecosystems of Costa Rica's Pacific coast.

This class serves as 1 credit accompaniment to the AnSci 366 Veterinary Microbiology Lab. Topics covered emphasize both the role of microbes as health-promoters and vectors of disease in animals.

Students will learn about equine-assisted services, including equine-assisted therapy, equine-assisted learning, horsemanship, and interactive vaulting. This course will focus on the approaches and benefits of these services to individuals with intellectual, physical, sensory, and/or psychosocial disabilities across the lifespan. This course consists of both classroom-based learning as well as field experience at the UMass Hadley Farm. No horse experience is required, but students should be comfortable interacting with horses.
