This is a stand-alone independent study designed by the student and faculty sponsor that involves frequent interaction between instructor and student. Qualitative and quantitative enrichment must be evident on the proposed contract before consent is given to undertake the study.

Independent Study

Individualized study with a faculty member. For Sophomores and Juniors a 500 word abstract summarizing the project to be presented at the end of the Spring semester on Science Day. Seniors present a poster on Science Day.

Biotechnology Laboratory

Students will receive practical experience in basic and advanced cell and molecular biology techniques used in biotechnology and research laboratories. The course first focuses on cell culture techniques, including seeding, maintenance, and cryopreservation. Subsequently, the differences between molecular analysis of transcription and translation will be addressed (RNA/cDNA, protein). For these analyses, cell cultures in their native form will be compared with bleomycin induced DNA damaged cell cultures. Overall, this course establishes a general understanding of cell growth physiology.
