Survey: Afro-Am Lit, 1746-1900

Offered as AFR 170 and ENG 235. An introduction to the themes, issues and questions that shaped the literature of African Americans during its period of origin. Texts include poetry, prose and works of fiction. Writers include Harriet Jacobs, Frances Harper, Charles Chesnutt, Frederick Douglass and Phillis Wheatley.

Intro to Black Women's Studies

This course examines historical, critical and theoretical perspectives on the development of Black feminist theory/praxis. The course draws from the 19th century to the present, but focuses on the contemporary Black feminist intellectual tradition that achieved notoriety in the 1970s and initiated a global debate on Western and global feminisms. Central to the exploration is the analysis of the intersectional relationship between theory and practice, and of race, gender and class.

Intro to Basketball

This class will focus on the technical and tactical aspects of the game of basketball. Students will learn proper technique, strategy, and the rules of the game. Classes will include skill building drills, side games and scrimmages.

Whitewater Canoeing

This course will teach the basics of whitewater canoeing. We will start in flat water and learn the strokes needed to propel and steer a canoe, and then will progress to moving water and Class I rapids, where we will learn the basics of maneuvering a canoe in rapids. Depending on the groups' skills, we may progress into Class II rapids. This course is listed as running from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. It generally will not run that entire time, but possibly will a few times.

Independent Study

An independent study is a semester-long academic endeavor planned in conversation between a student (sometimes a group of students) and a faculty member. Faculty permission is required. In some cases there may be an additional person(s) from the Hampshire community participating in the independent study as a mentor. Hampshire recommends four credits for a successfully completed independent study. It is equivalent to taking a course in terms of academic rigor and time commitment (generally 180 hours of academic engagement) and counts towards full-time enrollment for Hampshire students.
