Data Science Fundamentals

This course provides students with an introduction to the R programming language that will be used in all core courses and many of the technical electives. There is a growing demand for students with a background in generalist data science languages such as R, as opposed to more limited software such as Excel or statistics packages such as SPSS or Stata. The course will also provide students with a solid grounding in general data management and data wrangling skills that are required in all advanced quantitative and data analysis courses.

Catalysis: Fundamentals...

An integrative and interdisciplinary approach to catalysis science and applications with links to fundamental chemistry and engineering concepts. Overview of catalysis subdisciplines, methods of catalyst and nanomaterials synthesis, characterization of nanomaterials and surfaces, principles of reactivity of molecular, solid and biocatalysts with illustrations from industrial processes.

Elections Around the World

Elections are the engine that power domestic and global politics in countries around the world. But electoral systems are quite varied. This course systematically compares electoral systems: how they function, what is expected of them, and how effectively they meet those expectations. Case studies include the U.S., U.K., France, Canada, Brazil, Russia, Ukraine, Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong as well as others depending on class interest.

Internat'l Polit of East Asia

This course highlights the role of East and Southeast Asia in contemporary world politics. It focuses on Japan, China, Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Thailand. The course analyzes how these countries interact with one another and with the international system as a whole. Topics covered include security, political economy, and human rights.

FYS-Surviving & Thriving/UMass

This seminar is designed to help international students who have never studied in the USA make a successful start at the university in the College of Natural Sciences. We will review campus resources and opportunities, give students the chance to ask lots of questions, and help students integrate into campus life. Undergraduate teaching assistants will mentor students and assist with the transition to the university.

Economic development of Europe from ancient times to late twentieth century, focusing on episodes and methods that influenced economic growth. Emergence and development of economic institutions in Western and Eastern Europe (Britain, France, Germany, Russia, Ukraine).
