FYS-Pros & Cons of "Big Data"

When Google or Meta announce yet another data breach, what does that really mean? In today's world, governments and companies regularly collect and use large amounts of personal data. As a result, no one?s data is completely private anymore. Even ordinary people - like you! - frequently benefit from big data in their everyday lives. In this course, we'll learn about how data is commonly collected, who?s collecting this information, and what they stand to gain from it.

Poetry of the African Diaspora

What is African poetry and how has it evolved over time from oral to written literature? In this course, we will read and respond creatively and critically to poetry by people of the African diaspora with a focus on people with ties to the Sub-Saharan region. We will explore both oral and written poetry as well as themes of identity, nationhood, and spirituality. By the end of the semester, students will create a chapbook with (20-30) poems and will be encouraged to submit their poems to journals for publication.

Drawing II: Installation

How do we draw in three-dimensional space? This course will examine how artists have brought techniques of two-dimensional drawing and reimaged their application to three-dimensional space. Drawing as Installation explores drawing as a conceptual and formal tool that is designed to have a particular relationship with spatial environments such as architectural site-specific locations, with time, and with conceptual and/or social level.

FYS-Modeling&Data Storytelling

The objective of this course is to help you understand: 1. Why model 2. How to be a model thinker. We will go through some important models in various disciplines in the first half of semester, roughly speaking. For the rest of the semester, you will pick one of those models and apply it in any questions of your interest as an individual project or group project.
