International Student Success

This seminar is designed to welcome international graduate students who have never studied in the USA into the UMass Amherst community. It will provide students with tools and strategies for a smooth transition to the campus and for building a foundation for a successful academic experience. Students will be exposed to keys to success in graduate studies through understanding the structures and procedures of a major research university.

ST-Pro Skills Essentials

This course is designed to accompany an internship experience (remote and/or in-person) and is available to students participating in an internship in the same semester. Experiential learning opportunities not only add value to a student's professional pursuits, but also serve as a vehicle for learning key professional skills such as teamwork, communication, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills. The class is intended to expand upon the internship experience through personal reflection, relevant readings, writing, group interactions, subject-matter expert speakers, and site visits.

Leadershp thro' peer mentoring

This course will help Peer Mentors develop leadership insights and skills that will help them in their current roles as well as prepare them for future ones. Class time will involve facilitated discussion of Peer Mentors? real-time leadership experiences, challenges, and best practices. Out of class responsibilities will include several readings and brief written reflections.

Resilient Warrior

This course was created by Home Base and is designed to reduce the impact of stress through a variety of mind-body techniques as well as skill-building exercises scientifically shown to improve medical symptoms, mood, and well-being. This course includes stress management techniques that have proven effective in promoting health and building resilience among military members and veterans throughout the country. Active, Reserve, National Guard or prior military service is a prerequisite for this course.

STEM-Ambassadors Program- Spr

This is a continuation of the Fall course. Students work in small groups with a research faculty advisor and graduate student mentor. They engage in a variety of activities related to STEM research, education and outreach. Students experience the STEM research culture at the university, engage in group and independent research projects, engage in mentoring middles school students, and interact with a diversity of STEM professionals.

As a STEM Mentor you will build relationships with at-risk youth that support student self-efficacy as well as building key life and career skills. This mentoring program works in partnership with the Connections after school program in the Holyoke Public School District.
