WaterOil&Blood:MidEast/GlblPol

This course introduces students to the contemporary dynamics of the Middle East and North Africa. By using as metaphors three basic substances that are important to the region and the world, the course spans basic issues of Middle Eastern cultures, recent history, and politics in an innovative and interdisciplinary fashion. More specifically, the course includes the attention to Islam, Western colonialism, Israel, Iran, contemporary growth, regional conflicts, the role of the US, and the role of the Arab uprisings of 2011, among other topics.

Silviculture

Silvicultural practices used to manage forests for timber production, wildlife habitat, and watershed protection. Special focus on southern New England, but techniques apply to forests throughout the world. Lab: developing silvicultural plans for project areas. Prerequisites: one course in ecology, and one course in plant identification.

Plant Biotech & Tissue Culture

Biotechnology has experienced tremendous growth in last two decades and has transformed the areas of crop genetic engineering for food, fibers, biofuels and medicine. Plant tissue culture techniques facilitated the introduction of genes into plants for making crops resistant to herbicides, insects, production of edible vaccines, biofuels and healthy foods. Therefore, knowledge of plant tissue culture and transgene technology is highly desirable for preparing and training next generation scientists.

Public Administration

The course develops the practical knowledge and analytical skill required to make sense of field problems faced by public managers, and to design and implement strategic and effective practical action in the public sector. Satisfies the Integrative Experience requirement for BA-PolSci majors.

Chmcl Reactor Design

Analysis of the kinetics of homogeneous and heterogeneous reactions. The influence of transport and non-ideal fluid behavior on kinetics. The influence of in-homogeneity in temperature and mixing. Design parameters for ideal reactors and changes dictated by non-ideality. Prerequisites: courses in physical chemistry, thermodynamics, and differential calculus.

Biotech Lab Modules

Laboratory Modules are hands-on training in interdisciplinary and translational experimental, analytical, and computational techniques. Modules emphasize developing and/or adapting tools to better serve the biotechnology industry.
