This is the first of a two semester course required of all entering students in the Master's program in higher education. It provides an overview of higher education in America and investigates the ways higher education is constructed, defined, managed, studied, and though about.

The purpose of this course is to allow graduate students to apply research skills and knowledge to a research project in the area of higher education.

This course is designed to support the development of an original curricular or research leadership project that integrates pedagogies and/or understandings that draw on theories central to the Bilingual, ESL, and Multicultural Education, the Reading and Writing programs, and the LLC concentration.

This course examines the political, philosophical, and pedagogical foundations of multicultural education through various approaches to knowledge construction and production that shape from education institutions to teaching culturally and linguistically diverse student populations. The course presents perspectives on issues of access and provision of high quality public education particularly for students in underserved communities (Latinos in the U.S./Indigenous peoples in the Americas).

Essential skills for conducting educational research. Stating purposes and hypotheses, instrument development, research design, sampling, data analysis, interpreting results, and preparing research projects.

Lecture, discussion, field experience. Purpose, problems, issues, strategies, and materials in teaching mathematics at the middle and high school level. Required for licensure.

This course is designed to provide beginning graduate students in education and related fields with an understanding of the basic statistical techniques necessary for conducting research. Prerequisite: Educ 555.
