FYS- The Human Species

Welcome! This course is designed to help first year students develop skills and habits for college success. It is also an introduction to anthropology, which is the study of humans. We will look in depth at biological anthropology- the study of human evolution, human biology, and primates. In this course you will learn about campus resources, share your experiences adjusting to independent college life, and explore key questions in biological anthropology, such as: What makes us human? What are the origins of humanity? Who are our closest living relatives?

FYS- Journalism Success

This course will introduce students to the traditions and expectations of the Journalism Program, as well as resources and opportunities that will help them as they move through the major. Through workshops and exercises, students will meet faculty, get to know campus media and career services staff, learn about the writing and academic expectations of the program.

There's more than one way to find success in college and the path to getting there is different for every student. Our goals in this course are to connect with fellow students and the instructor as you become a contributing member of the community, both at UMass and beyond; start planning your individual academic goals and pathways toward achieving them; explore the different majors in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and start thinking like a social scientist.
