FYS-Applied Economics

This interactive seminar offered by the Department of Resource Economics (home to Environmental and Natural Resource Economics & Managerial Economics majors) will help you build a strong foundation for both your university experience and your understanding of applied economics. You will gain practical strategies, essential skills, and valuable resources to thrive in your undergraduate journey and beyond. Along the way, we will explore real-world challenges and examine how economics informs policy and solutions.

This course introduces students to college life and to the discipline of political science by way of exploring the politics of human rights. We will engage in questions such as: What are human rights, and where do they come from? Why is it so challenging to enforce human rights? How do marginalized communities make use of human rights claims to advocate for themselves? What are the limitations and potential pitfalls of human rights in a diverse and deeply unequal world?

FYS- 9 to 5: Sociology of Work

Work - much of our lives revolve around it. In fact, many of you are starting at UMass this fall to ultimately land a job in a career field you are passionate about. As sociologists, we are fascinated by the deeper social processes and interactions that occur in the workplace. In this course, we are going to spend some time exploring how sociology can help us understand the intricate workplace social processes that shape our work experiences.
