FYS-Economics Behind Our Lives

The Economics Department offers this seminar to first-year students to introduce the field of economics and aid in the transition to UMass Amherst. This course follows the College of Social and Behavioral Science's Pathways framework for developing as a college student. We will discuss important topics such as independent living, academic success, and using University resources. This seminar introduces first-year students to the world of how law operates in daily life by exploring the critical gap between law on paper and law in practice. Students will engage in interesting discussions and hands-on activities examining topics such as judicial activism, police violence, and human rights. The course addresses fundamental questions including why laws often fail to achieve their intended outcomes and how different communities interact with and resist legal institutions.

This course invites you to explore bold ideas, emerging technologies, and real-world strategies for creating a more sustainable and just future. Through interactive projects, hands-on activities, and reflective observation, you'll learn how planners, designers, scientists, and activists shape the spaces we live in, and how you can, too.

FYS- The Human Species

Welcome! This course is designed to help first year students develop skills and habits for college success. It is also an introduction to anthropology, which is the study of humans. We will look in depth at biological anthropology- the study of human evolution, human biology, and primates. In this course you will learn about campus resources, share your experiences adjusting to independent college life, and explore key questions in biological anthropology, such as: What makes us human? What are the origins of humanity? Who are our closest living relatives?
