An advanced course focuses on developing reading and speaking skills, expanding vocabulary, and improving the ability to describe/narrate in detail and support opinions. Topics chosen in consultation with the program director.

Burmese I is the first part of a four-part elementary course sequence in Burmese. The independent study format includes small group conversation sessions and an evaluation by an outside evaluator. Students studying Burmese develop speaking and listening skills needed for study abroad in Myanmar (Burma) and to support course work in Southeast Asian Studies.

Persian VIII is an intermediate-level course for students who have completed Persian I-VII or the equivalent. The course teaches Iranian Persian (Farsi). It is also useful for students who want to learn Dari (Persian as spoken in Afghanistan) or Tajik (Persian as spoken in Tajikistan). Students studying Persian develop speaking, listening, reading, writing, and cultural etiquette skills needed for study abroad and to support course work in Middle Eastern and Central Asian Studies.
