Phonetic Processing

The sound system of English and, to a lesser extent, those of other languages. Phonemes, allophones, phonological rules, and historical changes in the English language. Phonetic universals in comparison to English phonetics. Reading and writing English words and sentences using the International Phonetic Alphabet, including special symbols used for coarticulation, dialects, disorders, and infant vocalizations.

Research In Comdis

Research strategies and their applications to research problems relating to normal and pathological speech, hearing and language processes. History of research in areas relating to communication disorders; university research resources; role of statistics in speech, hearing and language research problems; evaluation of research.

Intro to Hearing Science

With lab. Time and frequency description of acoustic signals. Physiology of the peripheral and central auditory systems. Topics in psychoacoustics, including methodology, absolute and differential sensitivity, loudness, pitch, frequency and intensity resolution, and binaural hearing. Prerequisites: COMM-DIS 211, PHYSICS 114.

Anatomy & Physiology II

This course is designed for undergraduate students in the Department of Communication Disorders. The course content serves as an introduction to neuroscience as it relates to speech, language, and hearing. The focus of this course is on the structure of the human brain and the spinal cord and on the functional organization of the central and peripheral nervous systems. Your learning experience will be supplemented by the use of interactive digital atlases to learn the gross anatomy of the major neural systems underlying sensory, motor, and cognitive function.
