S- Reading Transgender

From newspaper chronicles of nineteenth-century gender outlaws to the present-day explosion of transgender poetry, our personal, cultural, and political understandings of gender nonconformity in the United States have long been tied to particular modes of representation. Through sustained engagement with such creative work, as well as background reading in transgender history and theory, this course will explore the literary history of trans. Although we will pull material from across time and genre, we will focus on contemporary writers like Janet Mock and Andrea Lawlor.

ST-TextTransfrm/ClsclChineseTh

This course examines the development of classical philosophy in pre-modern China, beginning from the Lunyu, Daodejing, and Zhuangzi. We will consider changes among commentators to the same material, as well as changes in commentarial strategy that occur over time, taking into account major cultural shifts, such as the advent of Chinese Buddhism. While classical Chinese traditions are generally viewed as philosophical or religious phenomena, here they will be presented as a set of linked traditions that changed in response to social, political, and religious shifts.

ST- Governing the Commons

Over the last decade or more, there has been a detectable and growing dissatisfaction among students with the "status quo" in the way the society works. Students have witnessed terrorism, long-term war, a "great recession," the "Occupy" movement, effects of climate change and worse projections to come, and most recently, a global pandemic with a great impact on the economy. Many students are looking for models of hope and alternatives to the status quo on how society at local, regional and global levels might operate to collectively address problems.

S-IntJustc/AgeOfGlobalConflict

This course examines the role that international justice plays in globalized conflicts around the world, specifically taking into account psychological and social scientific perspectives. We will start by looking at different forms of justice, their limitations and dangers, and how they were applied in international conflicts (e.g., Nuremberg trials, truth and reconciliation commissions such as in South Africa, international criminal tribunals such as for the former Yugoslavia, native justice traditions such as those by the Navajo or Gypsies).
