FYS-InterculturalComm&Identity

The former President's words remind us that across educational spaces in America, there are language differences. Many students speak more than one language. Other students speak different dialects of the same language. Every student speaks their own idiolect, meaning they have a unique way of using language that is particular to their social identities. Our language differences relate to other aspects our social identities, including our race, ethnicity, nationality, socioeconomic class, gender, age, or geographic location (among other factors).

FYS-Applachian Trail-Greenways

What are the benefits of greenways? How can planners and landscape architects design our open space and recreation system to better the lives of the people that live near them? Come and explore Benton MacKaye?s original 1921 vision for the famous backpacking trek, the Appalachian Trail (A.T.). This primarily rural greenway that extends from Maine to Georgia not only contributes to the personal growth of those hikers who dare to journey into its wilderness, but also transforms its surrounding communities. S-Gender & Global Literatures

Using the prisms of gender and sexuality studies, this course explores how "desire" is represented in global literatures. Adopting a comparative perspective, the course will examine representations of gendered, racialized, and sexualized bodies in contemporary works of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and criticism. We will look at both the "local," in the United States, and the "global," in transnational contexts, including literatures from East/Central Europe and the Global South.

FYS-FoodIdentityEatingDisorder

This course will investigate the ways in which the diet and entertainment industries have driven the narratives of beauty globally, and how these narratives feed into discourses around food, identity, and the construction of dysmorphic bodies. Students will come to understand the socio-cultural functions of food and its role in identity construction; eating disorders and their health implications; and gain global perspectives on the body positivism movement. Creative assignments including a photovoice project will sharpen student?s observational and analytical skills.
