Soil Ecology

Biological processes found in the soil are essential to life on Earth. This course will introduce students to soils as their own ecosystem. Throughout the course, we will weave together descriptions of the diversity of life found within soils, plant-soil interactions and biogeography to paint a mosaic of soil life, its complexity and global importance. The final portion of the course will address the global challenges facing soil ecosystems and the potential of the soil health movement.

ST-Money,Pol,Power/NE Asia

The region has it all: nuclear weapons states, large economies, and divided nations. Despite (because of) the dynamism, there are many ongoing debates in Northeast Asia that have managed to avoid resolution. Amidst all the success, we often forget just how fast, sometimes violently contentious, and relatively recent Northeast Asia and its path of economic growth and democratization has been. This may explain the complex mix of money, politics, and power at play in the region.

FYS- Ethics for College Life

College life presents a wide range of moral challenges. Some are obvious and well-known: should I cheat? Should I pay for textbooks or is it okay to pirate them? Others arise out of the fact that, especially for incoming students, college represents a period of both self-definition and new responsibilities to oneself. One might wonder how to think about free speech and hate speech on campus, or how to navigate campus hookup culture in a morally responsible way.

FYS-GraphicNovel:Glimpse/Canon

This course is designed to introduce students to three foundational graphic novels from the canon, namely Scott McCloud's "Understanding Comics," Art Spiegelman's "Maus," and Marjane Satrapi's "Persepolis." Using McCloud's work as a compass, students will explore "Maus" and "Persepolis" while asking some of the following questions: What are comics? What is a graphic novel? Which elements, taken in tandem, constitute a graphic novel? How has time been depicted spatially?

FYS-Rock Music & Culture/USA

This first-year seminar examines both political culture and rock music culture in the United Sates from the 1920s-present. The course topic provides both practical application of historical methods, and a solid foundation for incoming students interested in pursuing an HFA track. Students engage directly with primary and secondary sources, archives, oral histories, scholarly books and articles and are encouraged to think critically and creatively about historical events, United States domestic and foreign policy, and rock n' roll culture.

FYS- Comics and US History

This course will examine the history of comic books in the 20th Century United States. It will use comics as a lens to look at major social, political, economic, and cultural changes. Major topics will include: how comics have represented (or not represented) the changing diversity of American society; the influence of war and politics on comics; fears about and regulation of comic books; how comics shaped and were shaped by the social movements of the 1960s and 70s including the Black Freedom Struggle and the Women?s Movement; the growth of comics into a multi-media industry.

FYS- Everyday Storytelling

What things, such as notes, photographs, fabrics, gadgets, and art, become part of a family story, and why? What stories do we save by telling them out loud, on film, or on the page? In this seminar, we will explore archiving (processes of documenting and preserving) and its relationship to the family, defined as any community or kinship network you are a part of.
