World Music

This class is an exploration of several music traditions from around the world with an emphasis on music's role on the larger cultural/social context of each geographical area. Students will analyze how people use or have used folk, popular, and art music in different societies from four major geographic areas: Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Each of the areas will be the focus of a course unit of approximately three weeks that will feature a live performance by a guest artist. (Gen. Ed. AT, DG)

S- All-University Orchestra

This ensemble provides all University members an opportunity to perform in a non-competitive atmosphere and achieve success according to one's individual goals. Students will be required to practice before each rehearsal. One performance will be given each semester. Attendance is mandatory. An audition is required.

Perform Wkshp Singrs

Performance, solo and ensemble. Satisfies ensemble requirement for vocal applied music. Use of opera ensemble literature to achieve ease, confidence, and some command of the stage as actors as well as singers. Class and public performance. Pre-requisites: Applied Voice, audition, and consent of director.

Music Composition/Visual Media

This course is designed primarily for MM Jazz Composition and Arranging students. It is open as an elective to graduate students in other areas who possess a thorough knowledge of composition and orchestration, and software notation skills. This is a project based course on writing music for visual media. It involves the study of the work of industry standard compositions in three visual media areas, TV commercials, cartoons, and film.

S-Sight Reading II

Provides the pianist with systematic practice in the various skills needed for fluent sight-reading. Exercises stress rapid eye movement, touch and transposition as a means to read by intervals and patterns rather than by individual notes. Sight reading repertoire given in a well-graded progressive order and analyzed for note and chord patterns. Two-semester course.
