Cultural Dance Forms

In this immersive once-a-week class, students will learn the dance technique and philosophy of Katherine Dunham, which draws together rhythmic, movement, and cultural aesthetics of traditional and social dance forms with classical ballet and modern dance. Through dynamic and polyrhythmic barre exercises, isolations, progressions, and culturally based choreography, accompanied by Afro-Caribbean based live drumming, students will develop an increased understanding of dance as rhythmic motion and of intercultural communication.

Rhythm Analysis:Dancers Prsptv

An overview of rhythm, harmony, and various musical styles as they relate to teaching dance, choreographing, and performing. Students will learn to read rhythmic notation, study and play a variety of percussion instruments, and engage in movement, vocal, and percussion improvisation. Some degree of previous dance training or experience is suggested as this course is geared towards but not limited to dance majors.

Emerging Choreographers

Through meetings weekly with various professors and professionals in the field, each student will be guided in drawing from their studies in various fields at the university. Emphasis is in integrating the student?s body of knowledge with their experience and community in the five college dance department. Workshops and presentations in lighting, staging, videotaping, creativity, collaboration, and production to help each student prepare the most exciting work possible for the concert stage.

Sem-Senior Project

Course requires that individual BA and BFA candidates create an 8-12 minutes of original work, bringing it through all stages of production to concert performance. Students will take on all aspects of being creative director of their senior project; including auditions, casting, rehearsal schedule and overall creative process. In addition, students will be required to keep a written journal and also submit an in depth creative process research paper.
