RESRCH: MOLECULES, CELLS, SYST

Laboratory sessions in this course combine observational and experimental protocols. Students examine cellular molecules, monitor enzymatic reactions, photosynthesis and respiration to study cellular function. Students also examine embryology and the process of differentiation, the structure and function of plant systems, and the physiology of certain animal systems. Prerequisite: BIO 132 , (normally taken concurrently).

Object and Environment

In this course students will explore the sculptural object as a self-contained form and as an element within a found or created environment. Traditional materials such as steel, wood, plaster and concrete will be taught concurrently with more ephemeral materials including paper, wire mesh and found materials. Ideas originating within the traditions of modernism, postmodernism, minimalism, post minimalism, installation art and public art will be introduced through slide lectures, readings and independent research. The course will culminate in an independent project.

Weight Training

This course will give students background knowledge and first-hand experience in stretching, weight lifting, and aerobic conditioning. Students will learn the basics of using weighted and unweighted exercise to train flexibility/mobility, strength, speed, endurance and coordination. Students will design and receive feedback on an individualized weight training program. Each class session will include stretching, cardio warmup, and weight lifting. Participants who have never been involved in a fitness program are especially welcome. 5-College students will be graded pass/fail.

Lead Rock Climbing

This class begins after Spring Break and run from March to May. This class is a perfect next step for students who have taken the Top Rope Climbing course, or who have top rope experience and are looking to take their climbing to the next level. Students should be experienced top rope climbers and competent belayers. We will cover rope management, anchors, belaying the leader and self-rescue. We will actuate this information outdoors. The goal of this course is to prepare climbers to be competent seconds for multipitch climbs and to provide instruction in lead climbing.

Top Rope Climbing

This class begins after winter break and will meet Tuesdays from January to March. While this class is a perfect introduction to students just getting into rock climbing, more advanced students will find challenge in mastering their climbing technique and exploring more advanced knots and anchoring systems. Students will learn safety techniques, rope work, knots, and climbing techniques. Enjoy the opportunity to exercise your body and mind using the indoor climbing wall and local climbing areas. 5-College students will be graded pass/fail.

Trail Running

This course is for active runners who would like to expand their runs to include the trails. Each session will include instruction and discussion of trail running skills and then put those skills to work with a trail run. The intensity of the runs will be determined by the group's ability with the goal of finding a suitable pace for everyone. 5-College students will be graded pass/fail. Minimum requirement: Must be able to run 2-3 miles consistently. Must own running shoes and appropriate clothing. Must attend at least one weekend trail running event with class.

Survival Living

Students are required to attend 3 weekend overnight trips: Friday 2/28 to Sunday 3/1. Friday 3/27 to Sunday 3/29. Friday 4/17 to Sunday 4/19. Survival living is the practice of staying alive in the outdoors under harsh, inhospitable, unforgiving or unfamiliar conditions, terrain, weather or climate. We will practice winter camping and shelter building, orienteering, and the use of fire. Also night hiking and backcountry travel on foot, cross country skis and snowshoes. The course will culminate in a final 3 day solo.

Outdoor Adventure Sampler

This course is an opportunity to experience many activities that make up outdoor adventure. Students will be introduced to natural areas in the Pioneer Valley and Western Massachusetts. In the winter, activities may include snowshoeing and cross country skiing. As spring arrives, students will canoe, hike, and climb. This course is an opportunity to get out each week and learn new outdoor adventure skills. 5-College students will be graded pass/fail.

Beginning Yoga

Learn the basics of yoga practice, including asana (physical postures), pranayama (breathing techniques), vinyasa (moving with the breath), philosophy and meditation. This class is intended for those new to yoga or those looking for a slower paced, instruction-oriented class. Please wear clothing you can move comfortably in and bring a yoga mat. Yoga mats are available for sale at the Hampshire College equipment room for $14. Five College students will be graded pass/fail.
