ST- Powering Development

This course examines the human harnessing of water and use of energy to power development over the past century around the world. We will pay particular attention to how infrastructure projects and development plans are often enmeshed in colonial power relations through a reading of interdisciplinary literature in politics, history, geography, and sociology as well as reports from international and non-governmental organizations.

Intro to Language Science

This course is designed for undergraduate students in the Department of Communication Disorders. The course content serves as an introduction to language structure, processing, and variation in the context of communication disorders. It serves as preparation for the study of language development and disorders throughout the lifespan. Through a series of case studies, students will learn to analyze and describe typical and impaired language abilities, with particular focus on the production of words, sentences, and conversational interactions.

ST-Topics in Continuum Physics

The course will address elementary concepts in continuum mechanics: conserved scalar and vector fields, equations of motions, and the stress tensor. We will apply this formalism to study the basic equations of fluid mechanics for simple and complex fluids, and will characterize viscous and inertial phenomena. The course will also discuss the basic equations of elasticity of solid bodies and other types of condensed matter, and will emphasize the interplay of mechanics and geometry in this field.

ST- Topics in Lab Techniques

The class introduces students to different experimental techniques and limitations in order to help them succeed in an experimental research PhD. The objective is to familiarize students with experimental techniques common to many physics research laboratories. It will provide hands-on knowledge.

ST- Islamic Law & Society

The purpose of this class is to provide students with an introduction to the main theoretical and practical dimensions of Islamic law. The course will cover: a brief historical overview of the development of Islamic law, the methods and foundations of Islamic legal theory, the main substantive topics and divisions of Islamic positive law, and at few major areas of Islamic positive law in relative depth.

Landscape&WatershedBiogeochem

Landscapes and their geology influence atmospheric and hydrologic functions, which govern the sources and transport of elements. Watershed exports are cumulative integrators of soils, bedrocks, and vegetation elemental cycling, controlling the rate of elemental emissions to the Earth?s atmosphere and to the oceans. In this course, we will evaluate quantitatively and qualitatively elemental biogeochemistry in watersheds and across landscapes. Moreover, we will examine how human populations affect these scale processes.

S-Wearable&MobileSens/ClincSci

The health care systems of many industrialized nations, including the US, are facing daunting challenges such as a clear trend towards an aging of the population. This large elderly population having complex health conditions is beginning to severely stress the Medicare system. Researchers, health service providers and government leaders are seeking technological solutions to this problem in order to expand the capabilities of the healthcare system.
