Infotech & Social Media/HT-MGT

This course examines the strategic use of technology in modern hospitality and tourism organizations including the utilization of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and social media as a marketing and management tool. The application and use of both business intelligence and hospitality business analytics is also explored.

Human Biological Variation

This course focuses on the science of human genetic and biological variation. How does variation come about in evolution? What is the evolutionary explanation, distribution, and significance of human variation in, for example, sickle cell anemia, skin color, and sports performance? We will read primary literature and consider how individuals placed in group, how are differences studied, and to what purpose. This semester we will focus on the idea of race as a genetic construct versus a lived, social reality.

Photo 3: Advanced Photography

The focus of this course is the development of a semester-long photographic project. Students will acquire the technical and critical skills needed to create and sustain an in-depth body of work. They will plan, research and edit a project with the aim of effectively conveying complex narratives, ideas and questions through images. The class will also focus on refining critique skills, writing about art, and researching funding for projects. Artist visits and presentations will further acquaint students with contemporary photographic practices and the potential of long-form photographic work.

The Body in Mod & Contemp Art

The representation of the human body is central to the history of art. This course will explore this crucial subject as it has been portrayed over the past two centuries. The course begins with readings on anatomy and the shift from Jacques-Louis David's virile masculinity in the 1780s to a more androgynous and even feminized male as rendered by his followers. It then will explore the spectacle of a modern city in which prostitutes/ Venus/ femme fatales/other kinds of working women, often were favored over the domestic sphere.

ST-Advanced STEM-German

In this course, students will focus on technical and scientific German to expand their proficiency in the German language at the advanced level. Students engage with a variety of foundational vocabulary and language structures in mathematics, medicine, biology, chemistry, mechanics, computer science, and electrical engineering. The focus will always be on German perspectives, policies and research to help students build internationally informed views on their STEM-major discipline.

Lie Algebras

Lie algebras are linear algebra devices of great usefulness in mathematics and physics as an efficient tool for the study of symmetries of objects. This course will cover the fundamentals of the subject, including nilpotent and solvable Lie algebras, as well as semisimple Lie algebras and their representations.

Science & Society/Modern China

Science has meant many things in modern Chinese history. It has been pursued as a force for sovereignty, enlightenment, civilization, modernity, economic development, social transformation, political liberation, state authority, democracy, populism, individual opportunity, international solidarity, global power, and more. This course will explore how science has shaped modern Chinese history and the roles played by scientists in supporting and challenging the state.
