Latin American Cinema

(Offered as SPAN 238 and FAMS 238) How have Latin Americans represented themselves on the big screen? In this course we will explore this question through close readings of representative films from each of the following major periods: silent cinema (1890s–1930s), studio cinema (1930s–1950s), Neorealism/Art Cinema (1950s), the New Latin American Cinema (1960s–1980s), and contemporary cinema (1990s to today).

The Bible As Literature

A close reading of significant portions of the Five Books of Moses, done from the perspective of literature: how are the human and divine characters built, what interior life do they display and what philosophical view do they convey?  Attention will be given to the nineteenth-century theories that approach the Bible as a composite book delivering a nationalistic story. Students will also reflect on the impact of the Bible in Western literature, from Dante’s Divine Comedy to R. Crumb’s cartoon retelling of Genesis. Taught in English.

Music & Culture II

(Offered as MUSI 222 and EUST 222) One of three courses in which the development of Western music is studied in its cultural-historical context. Occasionally we will attend concerts in Amherst and elsewhere. Composers to be studied include Beethoven, Rossini, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Chopin, Liszt, Berlioz, Wagner, Verdi, Mussorgsky, and Brahms. Regular listening assignments will broaden the repertoire we encounter and include a wide sampling of Classical and Romantic music.

The Wild & the Cultivated

[C] For thousands of years, wild and domesticated plants have played crucial roles in the development of cultures and societies. Students in this course will consider human relationships with plants from a global-historical perspective, comparing trends in various regions and time periods. We will focus on the Neolithic Agricultural Revolution, seed-saving practices, medicinal plants, religious rites, food traditions, biopiracy, agribusiness, and biofuels. Two class meetings per week.

(Offered as ARHA 384 and ASLC 384) An image that can be replicated serves a very different function from a single unique work of art; it addresses new audiences and elicits a wider range of responses. This class will explore three different types of replicated images in Japan—woodblock prints, lithographs, and photographs. With the unprecedented achievement of literacy among urban populations during the early seventeenth century, Japan developed highly inventive woodblock texts and images.

ST-Fire Ecology & EcoSyst Mgmt

This course explores the science of fire ecology and management. It focuses on fire as a management tool, including the effects of fire on plant and animal communities, fire weather, fuel types and models, and fire behavior. We will examine the history of wildland fire in New England with optional field trips to investigate

CAPSTONE SEMINAR: CESC CONCENT

The CCX 320 seminar provides a forum for Community Engagement and Social Change concentration students to develop research projects that synthesize their prior coursework and practical experiences. In a typical capstone project, a small group of students focus on a particular social justice issue, research past and present community-based efforts around the issue, and develop a community action plan in collaboration with an off-campus community partner. Students are provided with readings, discussions, mentoring and other support to complete capstone projects.

RESEARCH: SYSTEMS NEUROBIOLOGY

Understanding how organisms sense the external world, how they move around in their environment, and why they exhibit complex behaviors requires studying the nervous system function at many levels of biological organization – from genes to whole animals, and everything in between. In this course, you will gain experience with methods that enable neuroscientists to ask questions at the systems level. Students will begin the semester reading and discussing relevant literature and developing research proposals.
