INTELLIGENT USER INTERFACES

This course covers principles of human-computer interaction and human interfaces to computers and computing devices. It will look at human factors, models of human perception, and human information processing and how they influence interface design, focusing on design principles, usability, user testing and other user evaluation methods. These concepts will be explored concretely

ALIEN WORLDS

This course explores the study and search for extraterrestrial worlds. We will study in detail our own solar system, the formation and evolution of planets, planets outside of our solar system (known as exoplanets), and the architecture of planetary systems. We will investigate the detection techniques developed by astronomers to discover and characterize exoplanets. We will explore what makes a planet habitable, the possibility for extraterrestrial life, and the potential for the discovery of extraterrestrial life in the future.

CONTEMPORARY SOUTH ASIA

This course introduces students to the culture, politics and everyday life of South Asia. Topics covered include religion, community, nation, caste, gender and development, as well as some of the key conceptual problems in the study of South Asia, such as the colonial construction of social scientific knowledge, and debates over “tradition” and “modernity.” In this way, we address both the varieties in lived experience in the subcontinent and the key scholarly, popular and political debates that have constituted the terms through which we understand South Asian culture.

Turn of 20thC German Life

This course examines historical, cultural, and political developments from 1870-71 to 1933. Topics to be discussed will include the unification of Germany into a politically integrated nation state, German industrialization, Expressionism, early German film, and Hitler's rise to power. Thematic focus helps students develop accuracy, fluency, and complexity of expression. Reading, writing, and speaking are consistently integrated.
