Fundamentals of articulatory and acoustic phonetics, with a particular emphasis on the application of experimental results to theoretical problems in phonetics and phonology. Topics also include the components of models of speaking and listening, from the feature up to the phrase. Students carry out experiments investigating aspects of speaking or listening in the phonetics laboratory.

This course is designed to help early childhood education majors learn about and develop methods for teaching mathematics and science in grades pre-K?2. Students will develop personal understandings and confidences in mathematics and science so that they will be able to design instruction for early childhood classrooms. In particular, students will learn the importance of problem solving and asking questions as core practices of doing mathematics and science for all children.

This course offers an introduction to the models and principles behind state-of-the art deep learning techniques applied to natural language processing problems. It is intended for graduate students in computer science and linguistics who are (1) interested in learning about cutting-edge research progress in NLP and (2) familiar with machine learning fundamentals.

Du Bois Department of Afro-American Studies at the University of Massachusetts and the Center for Political Thought and Leadership at Arizona State University. Building upon the evolving discussions of race and racism in our society, this course aims to serve as a model for improving diversity education on campuses across the country and contribute to a more informed and thoughtful national culture.

With construction being one of the most dangerous occupations, workplace safety is crucial for every successful building project. This course teaches basic safety concepts through guest lectures and the self-guided study of OSHA principles. Students acquire the 10-hour OSHA safety training (and card) as part of this course (at a small, additional cost), which is the basic requirement for any work on construction sites.

This course will cover current questions and state of the art research techniques in the study of pediatric physical activity interventions in different settings.
