S- Islamic Political Thought

It is often said that Islam is a quintessentially political religion, that it recognizes no separation between politics and religion or, sometimes, that it unequivocally calls for the creation of an Islamic state. However, what does it mean for a religion to have a political vision? This course will survey some of the main themes and concepts in Islamic political thought. Students will study the building blocks of orthodox Islamic political thought situated within the tradition of Islamic law.

ST-Crit Approaches/Law&Justice

The purpose of this course is to introduce the students to the basic concepts for the critical study of Law and Justice, both in US and in the international context. The course carries out a philosophical analysis of the main contemporary theories of law and justice. Philosophical and socio-legal debates on the "function and nature" of law in contemporary societies are exposed, with special interest in the US's case. At the same time, the relationship between law and politics, morals, economics, colonialism and, above all, justice is evaluated.

Interactive Fiction

Readers and spectators are always implicitly involved in the creation of an artwork?perhaps as interpreters or as respondents. But what happens when that work explicitly invites one to collaborate in its fictional world, to act in its arena? We live in an increasingly interactive environment, where even our appliances respond to our spoken requests. How might we employ a critical awareness of our relationships to these new technologies and the people, places, and things with which they connect us?
