ST- Practicing Literary Transl

This course offers extensive practice of literary translation with readings of key texts by translators of Iberian and Latin American literatures. Students will work on a semester-long project of their choice that is a translation involving any language combination of Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan, and English. As students become familiar with the varying views of translation, they will develop their ability to talk and write about translators' strategies and choices, and recognize translation as a scholarly activity.

ST- Political Economy of Race

This course will explore the dialectical relationship between racism and various aspects of political economy. In particular, we will focus on the ways in which markets, economic relations, and structures of governance have shaped and been shaped by the performance and (re)production of race and racism. This course will engage with, but not be limited to, materialist theories of race and racism.

ST-Econ Devlpmnt & Environment

This course introduces students to a holistic framework for understanding the relationships between global inequality, economic development, and environmental degradation. A range of practical pathways toward more sustainable global development are discussed and evaluated from economic, societal, and environmental perspectives.

Middle Eastern Metropolis

Some of the world?s largest and longest inhabited cities are to be found in the Middle East. How did these cities originate? What types of social arrangements and ideas did they support? How did they evolve over time? And how were they, and the people who inhabited them, impacted by specific forces such as imperialism, colonialism, tourism, consumerism, war, oil, and political protest? This course uses cities as a lens to explore the history of the Middle East, and the history of how the Middle East has been studied, from the 7 th century to the present day.

S- Seminar in Aging and Health

This course will focus on how physical health affects and is affected by psychological processes in late life. A biopsychosocial approach will examine leading theories of aging and their application to specific topics relevant to health of older adults. At the end of the course, students will have a grasp of the role that aging plays in the mind-body dynamic, and how changing psychological processes affect older persons' health behaviors.

ST-Trans&Interpr/PortugSpeakng

This course, taught in Portuguese and English, provides students with an overview of translation and interpreting theories and practices applied to community settings. Students will explore the use, need, and demand of translation and interpreting in Lusophone diasporic communities across the country, and practice translation and interpreting on different types of authentic texts/speeches, analyze and reflect on their performance as cultural and linguistic mediators.
